One of the things I’ve been meaning to check out in Phoenix is First Friday. Last night I headed out with Brittany to see what all the buzz was about. While I didn’t stay too late, I will definitely plan better for next time around.
We decided to take well advantage of checking out the Phoenix Museum for free and extremely glad I did. Unfortunately, we were not able to finish the entire building, but fortunately made it to every wing except for two and were able to sit down for a bit and watch the Persian dancer.
Our next stop was supposed to be a trip to The Lost Leaf to see a band and have a beer, but we got sidetracked by the art vendors on Garfield. It was fate that Angry One was there, whom I last saw at the Bizarre Bazaar. I finally ended up buying the Better F*$% Next Time shirt I’ve been dying to get. I also found a gorgeous necklace from Magnetastics. I didn’t get it for the magnetic factor, I pretty much got it because it was gorgeous. Bonus was that after I decided to get it, the man working the booth told me the name of the piece was Jealous Heart. My instant reaction was “yeah it is.” Perfect. My two purchases end up fitting my personality perfectly. I then decided I should not end up to a bar with the Twitter folk as it would’ve certainly pushed me over my spending limit for the night.
Here’s the gorgeous necklace (which just so happened to have matched my shirt perfectly last night):
And here are some crazies that graciously posed for a pic:
We ended up at Rock Bottom Brewery afterwards for some food and a beer and then I headed to bed, saddened I was too tired to play some Rock Band.
Add another fantastic find to my list. As I stated yesterday, I was determined to start going out more. In particular my goal was to find a sports bar (I really wanted to watch the Packers / Bears game, can you blame me?). I looked through the metromix guide and found some good ones and just as I was about to pick between some upscale ones, I found an actual Green Bay Packers themed bar in Old Town Scottsdale. Mabel Murphys which is in Oshkosh, WI, is apparently also in the Phoenix area. I got there late as I had to run back to Tempe first to do some stuffs, and it was completely packed by the time I got there, but the more the merrier! This place is PERFECT.
First, here are a couple things you see as you head towards the entrance:
Inside was crazy insanity and I felt like I was back in Wisconsin, no joke. Everyone was dressed in their GB gear and the game was on every single TV in the joint. I was drinking Sunset Wheat and yelling at the screen like the rest of them, and didn’t feel the slightest bit out of place. In fact, I might’ve been the milder of them all, seeing as I had been at work all day and hadn’t had much of a dinner yet. During commercials the song “The Bears Still Suck” would play occasionally and everyone would join in song.
Here are some photos. You’ll have to mind the quality. All I had was my camera phone and it was dark inside and just not a good atmosphere for award winning shots.
Also, here is a video of everyone breaking out into song. Once again, mind the quality and the movement of the camera. It was bad enough I was trying not to sing while taking it.. don’t make me stop dancing!
Most of my friends here are married, as well as most of the other acquaintances I know. I don’t mind it really, I love my friends. However, nights in get easier as you “get big” and I am going to try to break that habit for me. I need to make friends and get my own “circle of trust” going.
This lil socialista is going to start going out on the town . . . alone (EEK!)I figure it’s time to start exploring all the awesome things the area has to offer: figuring out where I like to hangout, where I don’t. Where it’s a meat market and where I can just chill, which is preferred. The best karaoke spots and the best dance and jazz clubs.
I’d like to say I’ll try a new place every day, but I’m thinking this might not be reasonable. However I can tell you that I will be updating you on my experiences as I go along. After all, that was really the whole point of this blog wasn’t it? I have been abandoning that lately, and I apologize.
Tonight’s goal? Finding a great sports bar to watch the Packers / Bears game and also a great karaoke joint.. I could use to belt out some tunes tonight.
If you are in the area and reading this, let me know.
I have determined that I need to start scheduling visits from friends and family. This is probably the best form of motivation for me to get my house in tip top shape.
So, if anyone would like to visit, realistically I can start accepting visitors the week before Thanksgiving. Let me know, and get your dates in now. I have a nice warm place and am expecting (and hoping) it becomes the new vacation spot for my crew
Need some enticing?
Haha What a great line for a blog post about my new phone.
Yesterday was the end of my 2 year contract, and marked my ability to finally get rid of my horrid Motorola Krzr. This was by far the worst phone I have ever had. The screen would flip upside down, the response time was completely unreasonable, and it just sucked.
For the past 6 months I have been pondering what phone I wanted to get next, and doing a lot of research on what I would like physically as well as had the capabilities I was looking for.
After learning that while the Instinct does mostly what I need, it lacks one of the key features I am looking for, which is the ability to use GPS and text/answer a phone call at the same time.
After making my way to the insanely huge and interesting Arizona Mills, I found the Sprint store and started to make my final walk through and come to a decision.
For a little over a day now, I have been the proud owner of a Blackberry Curve. It was a hard decision between that and the Pearl, and I really thought that the Curve would be too big for me, but I have to admit I really like it. I was also able to stay on an unlimited data plan but not unlimited minutes, which still gave me my GD discount. With the Instinct, I would’ve needed the simply everything plan, in which no discounts apply because it already is a large discount.
I have managed to navigate myself around it for the most part without using the manual. I am still trying to figure out how to assign ring tones to text messages and non phone calls as well as how to organize my contacts into groups, but other than a few minor things I love it. Having multiple applications open at the same time is great. It also recognized one of my pop email accounts without entering any server information.
I have 30 days to return it if I don’t like it, but I don’t see that happening.
Yay curve!!
I am back after a brief stint of no Internet aside from my phone, and hopefully this will be the last time this happens.
Friday I did a new first and went to haunted houses for the first time in probably more than a decade to be quite honest. I cannot even tell you the last time I was in one and I believe it was before high school.
The place – Arizona’s Original Scream Park. Four attractions in one location right off the 101 in Scottsdale. I cannot even begin to tell you how nervous I was, and I am positive there were children there 20 years younger than me that did not have the racing heart I did.
The 3D house was the first attraction we got in line for. The wait was about an hour. The whole time I was in the middle of Bob and Jessy holding her hand and occasionally having to put my 3D glasses back on. I got startled a few times, and we let some people in front of us as I was holding everyone up, but I did make i through. The whole time I was anticipating the end, which was a man with a chainsaw. When we reached the exit, and he turned on his chainsaw, I screamed, and ran. Ends up, I ran in the opposite direction I was supposed to, causing the actors to break character. That’ll teach them.
A haunted gold mine was our last house of the night. This one actually went underground and also was partially outdoors. None of it was inside. I was pretty nervous for this one too, despite my bravery through the last. However, this one was a little better; not sure if that was due to adjustment of having gone through one already or not.
I would also like to note that they are no longer allowed to touch you. Now I am sure this is not news to anyone else, but that is part of the reason I had such a fear of them. I remember times as a child being held onto and thinking I lost my friends or family.
By the time we were done it was past 1am so we headed back. I managed to sleep soundly without any nightmares and without waking up, which is unusual. I will definitely do this next year. Hurrah for overcoming my fear of haunted houses.
I did a little bit of exploring today as I wanted to get some errands done and cross some things off my list of things to find.
I managed to get to Ikea, which is only 3 miles from my house. I also found a cute market on the block over from my place, which had an amazing treat called Pirate’s Treasure. Of course I had to buy it. I have not tried it yet though.
I have successfully found the following items:
Here are some pictures from my journey.
During my trip to Ikea I took lots of pictures of various coffee tables, tv stands, and dining room tables to figure out what I want to purchase. I wanted to hang my LCD but the cable jack in my living room is against the short wall to the stairs, so it is looking like a stand it will be. Oh well it still gives a nice layout. Now I need to map out my current furniture to figure out how everything will layout, what will fit, and where the kids are going to go.
Other things I want to accomplish are:
Tonight I think I will try to get a few of the minor things done and then try to find a bar or other cute night spot.
I am still getting used to the time change. Last night I went to bed around 11pm and was up at 3 unable to go back to sleep. Considering I don’t have many belongings at my place right now and the bars were closed it was a little boring. Around 2:30 I took a nap for a few hours which hopefully helped. I might take another one to make sure I can go exploring tonight.
I miss everyone! Goodnight all!
