Surprise! I’m Single!
Nov 5th, 2008 by Tonia

On my way home from work today, I stopped into the gym to claim my company paid for gym membership (yay). It was a very good experience, and the two gyms I have checked out so far (one close to the office and one near my house) they look very clean and professional and have lots of equipment and offer great classes as well.

As I am signing up, I hear a familiar question:

“And will your spouse be signing up as well?”

My response?

“Nope. I got none of those.”

For some reason, ever since moving here (or maybe it’s just noticed because of the insane amount of things I have to fill out) I have repeatedly been asked for my spouse’s information when filling out forms and signing up for things. It didn’t quite hit me until today. I have now come down to a couple conclusions. Either (a) I look like I am or should be married or (b) everyone in Phoenix is taken so it is assumed that I am no exception.

I don’t know if this is a good or a bad thing. It could also be neither good nor bad, and maybe it’s just a standard question you learn to ask when you live in this area? Maybe it’s a western thing. Who knows. But realizing it has happened every single time has definitely made me curious in finding out.

Accepting the Inevitable
Nov 2nd, 2008 by Tonia

This evening I have learned to accept the inevitable – that it will surely take this entire week to unpack my house. I shouldn’t be too bothered by it, as I know that there are other people that take their time unpacking as well. Typically it only takes me a few days to unpack and then another week or so to organize. However, this move, is not going as quickly. My items arrived Tuesday afternoon and here it is almost a week later, and I have unpacked most of my living room, and my kitchen, and part of my dining room and that is all.

I am not typically lazy, and I’m not positive lazy is the word to even use in this circumstance either. I think it’s a combination of working right away after my move and going out and doing things with friends as well. The last thing I want (or need) is to pull an all-nighter just to pack when I have enough in my suitcases to last me another week.

I am doing my best to not become overwhelmed and frustrated and to use this move to not only enhance my career but to work on the nuisances I have with my personality, the biggest of which is lack of patience and needing to do everything this minute. Realistically the only people heading over here any time soon are a couple friends in the area, and they understand the unpacking deal.

Something that will help me to think in a more positive light is to focus on my accomplishments of this week:

  • Set up bank account and received checks in the mail
  • Have majority of the “onboarding” activities at work finished
  • Have all my initial phone calls and account creations and what not finished
  • Have all of my boxes organized and parts of my house mostly finished

Side note – I found the perfect pizza place here and it’s only a few blocks from my house. Barros is by far the best (great recommendation from my leasing office).

Routine
Oct 30th, 2008 by Tonia

Ever since I moved here I have noticed myself starting to work different hours than I normally do. Typically, my routine is to get up and just get ready and leave the house. I’ll usually arrive to work about 7am and work until 4.. then go home or do whatever I do for the evening, take a shower, go to bed, and start the whole routine over again.

This week, I have found myself taking my shower in the morning, getting into work a little later and staying later. It might be a little too early to tell, especially since it is partially due to not having access to my door yet I wait until I know someone will already be in the office, who knows. Typically, being out of routine really bothers me, but this hasn’t in the least. This evening I was able to drive home as the sun was about done setting and the sky was turning black and it was spectacular.

I promise one of these days when I take the long way home instead of the highway, I will take pictures of my view… which is mostly sunset and mountains about that time of day.

This realization today made me learn that I am able to adapt to new situations easily and am not as shaken up by disarray as I previously thought. I am looking forward to many more exciting changes and realizations about my life.
